Answer engine optimization: how to get cited by AI search
How AI assistants choose their sources, what to change on your pages, and how to measure visibility that never shows up as a click.
Where this actually lands.
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your pages easy for AI assistants to quote accurately. In practice it means answering one question per page in the first fifty words, using plain factual language, keeping specifics like prices, timelines, and numbers visible in the HTML, marking pages up with structured data, and building enough independent corroboration elsewhere that a model treats your claim as reliable.
Answer first, elaborate second. Assistants quote the top of the page.
Specifics get cited. Vague marketing language does not.
If content only exists after JavaScript runs, assume it will be missed.

What AEO actually is, and how it differs from SEO
Search engine optimization aims to win a click from a results page. Answer engine optimization aims to be the source an assistant uses when it composes the answer itself. The two overlap heavily, because both reward clear structure and genuine authority, but the winning format is different. Search rewards a page that satisfies an intent. Answer engines reward a passage that can be lifted and trusted.
This matters commercially because a growing share of research now finishes inside an assistant. The person still buys. They just arrive later, better informed, and having already chosen a shortlist you were either on or absent from.
How assistants choose what to cite
You cannot see the ranking function, but the observable pattern is consistent. Cited sources tend to share these traits.
- The answer appears near the top of the page, in a single self-contained passage.
- The claim is specific. Numbers, ranges, dates, and named conditions get quoted far more often than adjectives.
- The page is about one question rather than nine.
- The same fact is corroborated somewhere else the model trusts, such as a directory, a publication, or a third-party profile.
- The content is in the HTML, not assembled later by a script.
- The author or organisation is identifiable, with a real address, real people, and a traceable history.
The page pattern that gets quoted
Restructure your commercially important pages to this shape. It costs nothing and it changes how quotable you are.
- An H1 that states the question or the subject plainly.
- A forty to sixty word direct answer immediately underneath, written so it makes sense with no surrounding context.
- Four to six key points, each a complete sentence rather than a fragment.
- H2 sections that are themselves questions or clear claims, each answered in its first sentence.
- A short FAQ block at the end covering the follow-up questions, with answers that stand alone.
- Visible facts: price ranges, timelines, what is included, what is excluded, and who it is not for.
Saying who something is not for is one of the strongest trust signals available to you, and almost nobody does it.
The technical layer that still matters
- Server-render the content that matters. If a crawler with JavaScript disabled cannot read your answer, treat it as invisible.
- Use structured data honestly. Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, and Breadcrumb markup help machines resolve what a page is. Marking up content that is not on the page is a policy violation and it is not worth the risk.
- Keep one canonical URL per topic. Near-duplicate pages split the corroboration you are trying to build.
- Publish a plain machine-readable summary of your business at a stable URL, and keep it accurate.
- Do not block AI crawlers in robots.txt if you want to be cited by them. Decide that deliberately rather than by accident.
- Keep dates visible and updated dates truthful. Freshness is used as a proxy for reliability.
Why corroboration beats volume
A model weighs whether a claim appears consistently across independent sources. Ten pages on your own site saying you are the leading provider carry less weight than one industry directory, one client case study on a partner site, and one interview that all state the same verifiable fact about you.
Practically, that means your consistency work is optimisation work. Same company name, same address, same service names, same founding date, everywhere. Then earn a small number of genuinely independent mentions. That is slower than publishing more blog posts, and it is what actually moves citation share.
How to measure something you cannot see in clicks
AI answers frequently produce no click at all, so traditional reporting understates them. Track these instead.
- Prompt testing. Keep a fixed list of twenty buying-intent questions in your category. Run them monthly across the major assistants and record whether you appear, and whether the description is accurate.
- Referral traffic from assistant domains. It is small, but it is high intent and the trend line is informative.
- Branded search volume. Rising branded queries with flat generic rankings often means people are discovering you inside answers first.
- Enquiry quality. Watch for prospects arriving already knowing your pricing model or process. That is a citation you never saw.
What not to do
Do not generate hundreds of thin question pages. Answer engines are unusually good at ignoring low-substance content, and search engines will treat the pattern as scaled content abuse. One well-sourced page beats forty variations of the same question.
Do not fabricate specifics to look quotable. Being cited with a wrong number is worse than not being cited, because it becomes the thing prospects arrive believing.
Where to go next
The questions this usually raises.
Is answer engine optimization different from SEO?
It is an extension of it. Both need clear structure, technical health, and real authority. AEO adds a formatting discipline: answer one question in the first fifty words of a page, keep the specifics visible in the HTML, and make each passage quotable without surrounding context.
Does structured data help with AI search visibility?
It helps machines resolve what your page and organisation are, which supports accurate citation. It is not a ranking trick. Mark up only what is genuinely on the page, because marking up content that is not visible breaks search engine guidelines.
How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?
Formatting changes on existing authoritative pages can show up within weeks. Building the independent corroboration that makes a model confident in a new source usually takes three to six months of consistent publishing and real third-party mentions.
Should I let AI crawlers access my site?
If you want to be cited, yes. Blocking them in robots.txt removes you from the answers your buyers are reading. If your content is genuinely proprietary, block deliberately and accept the visibility trade-off rather than making the decision by default.
